Wins May Push Wang Closer to Cy Young

Submitted by Hank, Sep 6, 2007 21:26

If we just judge the pitcher by stats alone it will not tell you the whole story. Like Jessica said Wang line before the end of the game was 1-0 in the 7th inning vs the Mariners. Only when the game was finished was the score lobsided. If you've watched all of Wang's games this year you'll see the same trend. Wang keeps his team in the game long enough for the team's offense to finally catch fire and score. That is why he is winning so many games. His team-mates trust his ability to keep them in the game and ultimately their bat will connect and start scoring. Wang's contribution is not only in the stats but in the intangibles such as (1) groundball keeps everyone in the game focused on defense (2) innings become shorter and pace of game is efficient (3) he logs more inning allowing more rest for relievers so they can contribute for the "strike-out" pitchers (4) his calmness helps his team-mate to stay calm and focus at task at hand (5) his low homer count and double-play tendency helps reduces the risk of big innings...etc. In my view Cy Young is the best pitcher but a pitcher's most important duty is not just pitching but help the entire team. I'm not saying Wang should be the winner but I believe Stats alone does not tell the story why Wang is successful.
