The iPhone and the Technology Thieves

Even in the wireless world, exclusives regularly exist, albeit typically on technology boundaries. However, many are also carrier exclusives, at least for a period of time. The Sidekick has been a t-Mobile exclusive. RIM has been selling the Blackberry Pearl through GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) carriers only (t-Mobile, AT&T, and the majority of the world), and not the incompatible CMDA (code division multiple access) technology carriers (Verizon and Sprint, Japan and S. Korea). Almost every [US] cell phone is initially locked to a carrier, by the carrier, in order to recover their subsidies of the phone purchase. There may be legitimate rationale for removing those locks, like travel outside the region supported by your carrier, but alternatives exist to buy or rent a device that works in those regions, but only if the carrier supports that effort. Apple has every right to decide who they support and distribute product to, just as any manufacturer can chose who they use for distribution and sales. If you don't like it, buy some other phone from some other carrier. Consumers can vote with their pocketbook.
