The School Report Cards for the NYC DOE's persistently dangerous special ed schools show that over $50,000 per student, per year is supposedly spent in them. For this astounding sum of money, there should be staggeringly high numbers of extra teachers, administrators and staff and real experts on behavior management and modification - more than adequate to keep these kids safe and well-behaved.

The most recent audit I've seen showed that many of the administrators in these schools were actually working somewhere else, usually at district headquarters. And parents uniformly say that the extra aides and paraprofessionals who are assigned to their kids in these schools just aren't there. So where is the money really going - and why are such fragile, severely disabled children exposed to persistent violence and criminal behavior?

It's time for these schools to be subjected to real outside scrutiny and auditing. And the results should be made public as soon as they're in.
