Witching Hour In America

Submitted by Jennifer, Aug 20, 2007 00:09

It is so deeply disturbing and thoroughly dispiriting when I hear and see hatred in religion, as I do every day. History is rife with hypocrisy and its attendant atrocities, and contemporary culture is no different. Many persons who shun Paganism are entirely ignorant of the fact that every December they fill their home with pre-Christian Yuletide symbols of fertility and the five elements. I am not Wiccan; I celebrate Christmas, and I respectfully celebrate the traditions that have passed to me from another faith altogether.

To form a relationship with God, to find inspiration, strength, and courage to do good works, to love others, to promote healing and peace: these are admirable pursuits, no matter what belief system a person follows or by what name or gender they call the Divine. I hope, fervently, that this recent and long-overdue acknowledgment of Wiccans furthers general awareness of what is an open-hearted and tolerant religion, the chief "law" of which may be paraphrased as "Do what you will, but harm none".
