City To Battle at High Court Over Special Education

Submitted by Tina Cremer, Aug 19, 2007 12:59

It seems to me that funding is the cause of many problems in Special Ed. If the courts allow students to move directly into private schools, who is going to pay for it? Will the district go bankrupt? Will all children with special needs then attend private schools?

Politicians always place great importance on education. Yet, when in office, they will not vote to increase the funding to allow schools to provide the services to help students with special needs tlearn and become contributors to society. People chant that we can't just "throw money at the problem." They say that class size has no effect on learning. Why then does a tutor help a child learn more quickly? Smaller class sizes and more para professional aides would certainly improve learning and social growth of children with special needs and typical students in general education classes.

If tax payers required their senators and representatives to increase funding for special and general education classroom employees, there would be enough money to provide the services that private schools are said to provide to our students. Teacher quality is not the problem. Would you vote for higher taxes to fund quality education?
