Student Backlash Brews Against Untimed Tests

Submitted by Barbara Wilson, Aug 16, 2007 21:26

Linda's statement that "It's the attitude. If it isn't a problem for me why should it be a problem for anyone else?" makes it seems like everyone without a learning disability does not understand the cause. I have a child who rarely finishes tests, but does not have a learning disability. He does not receive extra time, and has just had to work hard to increase his efficiency. He is, along with many of his classmates, fully aware and compassionate towards the students in his class who do have learning disabilities. Part of the point of the article is that people with learning disabilities who are slower are bypassing those who don't have them. Miss Paxton pointed out that half the students with extra time in her class are going to Ivy League schools - in my day, children with learning disabilities were either in separate classrooms or separate schools to help with their needs, they were certainly not bypassing those without learning disabilities. Our society is overdiagnosed, and it sounds like your family is an example (you don't have one kid who is normal?). BTW - is the first child in the family the gifted one? A close family friend has diagnosed their second child as having "many learning disabilities" because she cannot compete at the same level as their "naturally talented" first born.
