An Inconvenient Truth

The first requirement of any theory is that it accounts for all the facts. The theory of global warming caused by man does not account for the various ice ages, or the cold spell in the mid 14th century. It substitutes sequence for cause and affect, basically stating we are more industrialised now than we were 100 years ago, and it is warmer than it was 100 years ago, therefore industrializtion must have caused the warmth. More people are playing golf t today than played 100 years ago. Maybe playing golf causes global warming. And now you cite the latest science that shows that it is NOT warmer than 100 years ago. What more can be said?

The second requirement of any theory is that it must make predictions that will either be proven true or false, thus either proving or disproving the theory. With global warming, no predictions are ever made, but whatever the weather brings, rain or drought, storms or calm, is taken as proof of the theory. That is not science, it is fundamentalist theology, where whatever happens in the world, good or bad, is taken as proof of God. (I am an Orthodox Rabbi, but not a fundamentalst.)

Michael Crighton wrote a novel called STATE OF FEAR, heavily footnoted, which debunked the myth of global warming. There is something in man, perhaps the same thing that makes people enjoy scary movies and roller coaster rides, that enjoys being terrified by forces too big for us to grapple with as individuals. Why this fear is not centerd on Arab Fundamentalism, which is real and immediate rather than on the mythic and long range issue of global warming is completely beyond my comprehension.
