My Romney Problem

This article is so misinformed. It would have taken all of 5 minutes for this writer to go the official website of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the Mormons) and see that the Church just came out with a guide for members of the Church with same-gender attraction (as the Church prefers to call it). It is does not condemn people for "who they are", as stated in the article. It expresses empathy for the difficulty faced by people that believe in the Mormon religion, but find themselves attracted to those of the same gender, since a basic part of the religion is the nuclear family, which contrary to the article, is not some peculiarity on the scrap heap of history, but the foundation of all societies, and the biological and biblical standard. This guide that the writer completely ignores makes clear that the Church welcomes those that are attracted to those of the same gender, but maintains the religious principle of reserving sexual relations for a man and woman legally married. Contrary to what the writer insinuates, the Church does not seek out gays in order to banish them, like a "witch hunt". The only circumstances that might bring about an excommunication based on sexual orientation are a member that has violated marital vows and refuses to mend his/her ways, or a member that publicly fights the Church's principles. Politely disagreeing about the propriety of homosexual behavior is not bigotry, as long as individuals are respected and treated with dignity. I think the writer of this article is the extremist, not the LDS Church or its adherents.
