O'Neal's Possible Departure Could Help or Hurt Nets

Submitted by JT, Aug 8, 2007 15:53

The best situation for the Pacers is to have J.O.'s services for another season in Indy. If things don't go well, and J.O. decides to give up his 2 years and 44M left on his contract so be it -- Larry will gladly waive bye-bye! Why? It's far from the Pacers losing him for nothing.... It would leave them at least 15M under the cap and able to sign a free agent or two of their own chosing next summer. Having him stay for 2007-08 will only help them see what they have with a new coach and developing players like Granger and Williams....if O'Neal is even thinking of opting out then he will have every reason to have his best season ever. After all, opting out is giving up 44M for just two seasons....there's no way anyone will pay him as a free agent, 22M a year on a new contract!!! He needs to have a career year to even hope for a 5 year deal worth say 60-65M...and if it doesn't go so well and he's injured again, it will be a whole lot less...and that's the possible bad news for the Pacers, that he won't opt out!!
