U.N. Area Development Plan Draws Fire

Submitted by Scott Baker, Aug 8, 2007 04:57

There have been an endless series of community board meetings and counterproposals by CB6, Municipal Arts Society and other parties both interested and well-qualified to offer qualified ideas to the correct-for-our-times development on Midtown East. The developer has seemingly rejected nearly all of them - perhaps they will rotate the buildings 90 degrees as a concession to the shadows and blocked views objection, but that seems about it. Ms. Karni is correct in noting that the Solow plan is neither Green, progressive, nor a good fit for a primarilly residential, school-starved, traffic snarled, mass-transit challenged area. I think I am correct in speaking for the other residents of CB6 in saying we would welcome diplomats and medical professionals as neighbors, but not more cars and certainly not continued restricted access to the river - which is even now being developed as part of the city's long overdue greenway around Manhattan. I hope that Solow will agree to a progressive solution, not just one that squeezes in the most tenants in the most apartments and offices. We have one chance to do this right and maybe a century to live with it if we do it wrong.
