The Longest Vacation

My wife and I were two of those included in United Van Lines figures for 2007. Immediately after I retired in March '07 we put our Long Island home up for sale and within 3 months moved to Columbus, Oh., because the New York income and property taxes made it impossible for us to contemplate staying in our home of 33 years on Long Island.

Ohio income taxes aren't greatly lower than New York's are, but just enough to make it worthwhile, and are scheduled to decline. Meanwhile, property taxes, housing costs, energy costs, food costs, gasoline costs, insurance costs (home and auto) etc. all are lower than on Long Island. Doctors and dentists charge less for office visits. In short, we can afford a far better lifestyle in Columbus than in New York on our retirement income.
