Infantilizing Citizens

In this case, it's not that the law is an ass -- it's that the teachers, principal and district attorneys are asses. As a former teacher -- and a former adolescent -- I hope I would have been smart enough to just ignore the butt-patting as a routinely dumb kids' fad that will run its course and disappear. But if I felt that something absolutely had to be done, I would have sent out a notice to all students stating that butt-smacking on school property was not permitted, and that violators would be appropriately disciplined. I would then have called in the boys' parents and asked them to ground their sons for a week, and perhaps required each of the boys to write 100 times, "I will not pat girls on the backside", requiring the boys to hand in to me the pages written, with each of the 100 versions numbered (no cheating!) That much boredom would have certainly outweighed the amusement of patting butts, and put an end to it. (By the way, if Nancy Joyce Jancourtz thinks that 7th graders are "prepubescent little boys" these days, she hasn't been around many 7th graders lately. But from the neck up, they are still silly kids whose sense of humor is at the Three Stooges level.)
