Ellison's comment does not presume that Bush had something to do with 9/11, only that he tried to benefit from it afterwards, as indeed he has. (See Daniel Pipes, for example, for a view that rejects Nazi guilt in the Reichstag fire.) The trouble with people like Twersky is that they take one small analogy--how the Nazis destroyed democracy incrementally and how the Bush administration is chipping away at it bit by bit--and extend it to the Holocaust. It took nearly a decade for the Nazis to bring German society to the point of accepting and even welcoming extermination. That is not what is being compared when we make an analogy between the Enabling Act and the Patriot Act, for instance.
