Since the sun scare began in 1989 we have seen a rise in numerous diseases. Staying out of the sun and applying sunscreen at the slightest exposure is leading to an epidemic of vitamin D deficiency conditions. Diabetes is emerging as one of them. Obesity and the metabolic syndrome, two conditions related to diabetes, are linked to vitamin D deficiency. The darker your skin, the more likely you are to suffer and/or die from vitamin D deficiency and its related conditions. Even diabetes 1 is emerging as preventable in the children of women supplementing 2000 IU or more per day. We are designed to make enormous quantities of Vitamin D on our skin from sunshine. A light-skinned person only needs about 20 minutes during sunny times of the year and day. Dark-skinned people may need 6-20 times more. The Canadian Cancer Society just announced that its population should supplement with 1000 IU/day to prevent cancer. Our current RDA is way too low.
