I had been to Janjira about three years back and was surprised to see that the past still lives fresh in the people's mind. Most of the Sidis have bronze skin color with curled African style hair. They are generally Muslims and fiercely proud of their past. The so called ruler of that area has a beautifully positioned mansion on the sharply rising hillside overlooking the sea and an impregnable fort on an island. The fort, though, is quite run down which is a pity. You must visit the place on a row boat against the rising tide and feel the the ingenuity of man carving out a fort from a solid rock island with its fresh water holding area built in to hold off any prolonged enemy attack.
