Cuomo Files Lawsuit Against ExxonMobil Over Brooklyn Oil Spill

Submitted by Joyce Newman, Jul 19, 2007 12:55

Riverkeeper hopes to bring about a comprehensive health study so that community members can determine what health risks are posed by the spill – such a study has never been done.

There is a concern that toxic vapors from the oil products may leak into homes causing serious health problems. We have sampled soil vapors and found dangerous levels of certain gases near the surface. Through our efforts the NY State Department of Health has initiated a vapor intrusion study and we look forward to their findings.

Riverkeeper's suit demands that Exxon take responsibility for its actions and repair all of the environmental damage it has caused and eliminate any health risks that its pollution has caused. We also demand that Exxon prevents anymore of its oil from seeping into Newtown Creek.
