The problem in the division playoffs was that by inserting Sheffield and Matsui into the lineup, the lineup with which the team was winning was disrupted. This team is now winning despite the fact that Damon is not hitting well. Although Damon's onbase % at .338 is not that high--as opposed to Giambi's .380 before he was injured--Damon does contribute. Damon steals bases--and if you look at a number of Yankee wins--using the running game has been a factor in a number of wins.

Giambi's walks, on the other hand, clog up the bases. It has taken 3 hits for him to score from first base! Damon can make things happen on the base paths. You can hit and run with Damon--not Giambi! The problem is that the team is not helped when it waits around for someone to hit a home run as opposed to making things happen. And, please, Melky Cabrera needs to play centerfield on an everyday basis. Although the Yankees may not have as many home runs as other teams, they are second or third in the AL in runs scored. It doesn't matter how you score runs, only that you score runs when you need them to win.
