Before anyone endorses Mayor Bloomberg or anyone else as an independent candidate for President we need to have a serious discussion of what would happen if an independent cadidate was actually elected. My guess is after he or she proclaimed "so help me God." you could play "quack quack", as this new Independent President would be a lame duck. The President any President is the head of a major political party. Getting legislation moved through a committee and on to the floor for a vote is an art. So is getting a budget passed. So is getting a Supreme Court Justice approved. President Bush had a majority in the Senate and still had a hard time getting justices Alito and Roberts approved not to mention Ms. Miers whose nomination went nowhere. So now let us assume an Independent third party candidate is somehow actually elected. He or She has not a single member of his own party in either the House or the Senate. This Independent President has just defeated the two candidates of the political parties that do occupy the House and Senate. Those two parties have spent in excess of 200 million dollars and countless hours of labor only to lose to this new Independent President. Now just what does anyone think they would do? My guess is this Independent President would wind up doing whatever Congress told him to do or nothing at all.
