Return of Giambi Puts Damon's Job in Jeopardy

I also believe that the return of Giambi will prompt Torre to put Melky on the bench and use him as a part-time backup for our veteran out- fielders when one of them "needs" a day off. And, our outfielders do need a day off. Damon, in fact, needs every day off. He has never hit anything close to what the Yankees expected when he came aboard. But 237 doesn't keep a young player on the parent club, and it shouldn't keep an veteran player on the club either. What benefit is a outfielder that hits 237 and has no arm at all? And, he bats lead off? Give me a break. The best thing other than releasing a player would be to let Melky play center everyday and let the other three outfielders share the other two positions with Giambi being the DH. Every week you give Giambi the day off and let one of the outfielders take over DH for that day. Then, immediately at the end of the season you get rid of Torre and a few of his "veterans" and let some of the kids play. One other thing. I've always loved Jeter. Since I live in the single A city that Jeter started in, I got to see him long before he arrived in NY. I've always thought that he carried himself in such a professional manner, how mature for a young guy on such a big stage. What I wonder about now, however, is about his role as "Captain" of the Yankees. Exactly what are the duties of the Captain? Are there any at all? Is it just a title? I don't expect Jeter to jump into every issue like some club or union rep, but a single word here or there would not be too much to ask of the Yankee Captain. Would it? Maybe I'm just used to Captains of the past. I wonder if Thurman Munson would have had avoided getting involved in some of the issues these Yankees have faced? I haven't seen the "Bronx is Burning," but I did live through it. Reggie, Thurman, and Billy didn't believe silence was golden, and it seems to have worked out ok for them.
