Even the Good Teams Are Guilty of Cap Foibles

While there is great debate regarding the Scola trade in San Antonio, it is hardly a matter of a few million dollars. Some of the pertinent facts that were left out of the article are as follows:

1. Luis Scola was not going to get any playing time on the Spurs. His defense is suspect and rebounding is weak. You won't play for Popovich with those characteristics. He was going to sign a 5 year extension w/ Tau Ceramica which would have made him 32 years old when it was over.

2. The Spurs have been offering JButt to anyone who would take him. He simply does not have the intelligence to play for the Spurs. Anyone in the league could have had him for a conditional 2nd round pick or trade exemption, but there were NO TAKERS.

3. This was done to pave the way for the Spurs to sign Ime Udoka who is a Spurs type player.

4. The Spurs have plenty of bigs for the future. They may bring over their 2005 1st roung pick this year Ian Mahimi from France and are definitely bringing over Tiago Splitter next year.

The Spurs are a small market team. The only way they can thrive is continuous fiscal diligence. It seems to have worked so far.
