Latin Mass May Damage Catholic-Jewish Relations

Submitted by Marlyne Teresa West, Jul 15, 2007 00:46

With out getting into the importrance of our past as Catholics and our traditions and faith and the importance of the Latin language, I would like to point to a few important things about what this Mass offers ALL peoples in it's Latin language. The prayers where the priest asks for conversion of all the Jews is a prayer of Mercy. We as catholics are taught that mercy and salvation belong to ALL through Jesus Christ....including the chosen people of Israel. We would also have to recognize that they do not believe in Christ, therefore they do not see themselves as in need of His Saving Grace. As Catholics we know that we all are in need of Christ salvation and we all need Him. With that said, you can understand why praying for the Jewish people is an act of compassion and Mercy. As Catholic that is what Christ has called us to....to do as he did, to recognize all as children of his Father. Jewish people believed that salvation was only for them and not the gentiles, so it's not hard to understand there is dismay at the Latin rite mass. As Christians, and followers of Christ, we know that salvation is meant for ALL. As a catholic, I am glad to be close to God and to be able to share that through prayer for my bretheren . Let's be honest, do you think they are praying for anyone others than the Jews. That might sting right a bit, but my Jewish friends have attested to this. Not to mention, I was not welcome in their synagouge. Though they fell from their glory of being chosen, and the the new Children have been given the opportunity to share in Christ's saving grace, let us never forget that although not chosen they will NEVER be forgotton by GOD. GOD, such as he is invites ALL to salvation...Jews and Gentiles alike! n short, these prayers also show Mercy. When I stand before God, will not be accused of leaving my brothers behind...I will be taking as many to heaven with me as I can. That's waht Jesus taught...Love your neighbor as you would love your self (the extension of the commandments, not replacement).
