As Daniel Johnson points out, it is now hard to think of another world-historical moment at which the church stood to render more aid to the continued survival of what used to be known as 'Christendom.' Call it what you will, "western civilization," "the modern world," or Christendom -- which latter I prefer -- it will only meet and surmount the mortal threat posed by militant Islam with the Church of Rome in the vanguard. It is inconceivable that any other arrangement would suffice. No world organization -- besides the church -- of any significance has spoken directly to the nexus of reason, violence, faith and Islam. American Jews need to think very deeply about this, and forget the church's past wrongs. And quickly. Pray for Israel. Pray for Holy Father Benedict.
