I think another factor in the NYC statistics is that many people donate substantial hours to communal organizations, such as co-op boards and garden committees, that do not count as nonprofit organizations. and so probably are not included in this study. However, having lived for years in Minneapolis/St. Paul, I agree that that city has a much greater spirit of volunteerism than NYC.
