A Jack Kerouac Controversy Hits the Road

Submitted by Paul Maher Jr., Jul 3, 2007 20:59

As a Kerouac biographer, I feel it deplorable to expect other scholars and writers to feel compelled to add a name or title to their bibliography for no reason at all. What Gerald Nicosia forgets is that his biography is now almost 25 years old, the scholarship is outdated with its sole merit, if we struggle for one, was his access to contemporaries of Kerouac who have since passed on. But even these are tainted by Nicosia painting the interviews with the hues of his biases and agendas. But that is another story.

Personally, Gerald Nicosia has been trying to undermine my own writing career, personal reputation, good name and scholarship with abitter letterwriting campaign aimed at a leading historian, a president of a publishing company and god knows who else. His press conferences of the past are slapped together with a thinly-veiled attempt at relevency. To expect anybody to include his name out of some distorted sense of personal/academic duty is profoundly silly.

Here is a tip for ya Gerry, get off your butt, go to the library and do some good old-fashioned research and write a book that will make people want to take notice instead of pissing all over what is left of your life. You aint getting any younger dude.
