Maintaining Beauty With Barbed Wire

The Central Park Conservancy is public-private partnership and thus marketing its maneuvers is a central (*wink*) part of its business plan. The unabashed orange mesh is practically screaming "it ain't easy being green", not to mention the placards informing park patrons that thousands of trees don't just take care of themselves, don't you know. And while this lack of subtlety may offend the gentle eyes of some, the in-your-face strategy is infinitely preferable to a national security-style approach: we're doing our job if you see nothing and hear nothing. Without a constant reminder (or 10 or 12) that work is in progress and needs constant support, I fear nothing less than Central Park Complacency from all of us who make a daily habit of the Park and it's high-maintenance amenities.
