I followed Mr. Baryshnikov's early dance career and have seen most of his performances here on the west coast since he left ABT and and must say that the man is brilliant at knowing what he can and cannot do. He picks his choreographers well and is impeccable and choosing his music. His solo performance in 2004 was outstanding. listening to Koji Attwood's piano solos while watching Mr. Baryshnikov dance was an almost euphoric delight. The Leon Redbone piece was another little bit of heaven. Now we have him dancing with these young dancers in Hell's Kitchen....I find it refreshing genius. I also find that he puts as much of the spotlight on the young dancers and choregraghers as he does himself and the reason he puts it on himself is so that the people will buy those tickets and pay attention to these young talented dancers whereas they would not have if he were not in the line up. Do I go to the performance to see Baryshnikov? You betcha. But I go knowing I'm going to enjoy whoever he's bring as well. He always gives me a good time. He gives 100%. Every movement he makes on stage is made for me...my interest, my entertainment. He practices, painfully..practices each movement for me. It shows and I appreciate it. No matter what anyone says in criticism of him I must say that they are absolutely wrong because there is not one person that has the talent that stands up next to this man....no one. Not even at sixty, not yet.
