The Case Against Homework Comes Alive in Two Books

I was startled by Mr. Kohn's assertion that there is no correlation between doing homework and grades. Mr. Kohn is either too ignorant to be allowed anywhere near a school or he is a liar. Here are some studies that flatly contradict his statement.

Indochinese Refugee Families and Academic Achievement. Scientific American, Feb. 1992. Samuel S. Peng and DeeAnn Wright.

A Model for Academic Success. Anthropology and Education Quarterly, Vol 21 1990. Schieider and Lee.

The amount of material a student successfully learns is directly related to the amount of time spent learning. This isn't a matter of opinion it is irrefutable scientific fact. That Mr. Kohn doesn't know this makes him unqualified to proffer a serious opinion. Parents, beware of this kind of psychobabble. Make your kids study until they know all that they are assigned to learn and get them used to it or put them at a catastrophic disadvantage for the rest of their lives.
