Campaign Against College Rankings

Submitted by Jane S. Shaw, Jun 27, 2007 09:23

I admire Robert Samuelson and agree with some of his points. But for U.S. News to depend for 25 per cent of its ranking on the "reputation" of a school undermines the supposed goals of measuring quality. And Samuelson fails to mention how administrators manipulate the rankings, such as "gaming" the acceptance rate -- wooing students who have little chance of admission so that they can be rejected. (I understand that some law schools have increased the number of part-time students because U. S. News law school rankings do not count LSAT and GPA scores for part-time students; students with lower scores and GPAs can be be shifted there.)
