I've been scootering aound the city for a couple of years and it is undoubtedly the best way to travel if you are going more than 5 miles. I also use a bike a lot and that is truly the best in Manhattan. What the city needs to do is take one lane away from cars northbound and southbound on the avenues and turn it into a real bike lane highway that cars cannot drive in. More people will take bikes and the city will change! Cleaner air and healthier citizens. I'm glad the mayor and the new Trans Chief are open to embracing bikes as a serious mode of transit. The parking issue for bikes and scooters also needs to be resolved. My scooter has been beaten into the ground by cars backing into it when parking. It's often hard to find secure bike parking. Again - take a small percentage (or more) of the space alloted to CARS and give it to BIKES and SCOOTERS and PEDESTRIANS we'll have a much better city. I own a car - but I park it in the BX and only use it for trips out of town. Bike & Scooter are the way of the future. Hey that rhymes!
