A Bigger, Better Ground Zero
in response to reader comment: Alicia forgot the memorial

Submitted by Andrew O., Jun 21, 2007 14:23

The powers that be have bent over backwards to ensure a fitting memorial at the WTC site, and then some. She didn't "forget" the memorial, she gave a voice to the vast majority of us whose desire for rebuilt Twin Towers has been conveniently forgotten, if not suppressed, by those in charge. Those who wished for rebuilt Towers were marginalized and demonized as "insensitive," "greedy" or "anti-memorial." Either you wanted a memorial OR you wanted rebuilding, and if you wanted the latter, you were painted as against the victims. this poisoned the atmosphere of the rebuilding debate, and the arguments of those in favor of rebuilding the Towers were suppressed by the media elite. Yet these elites wanted to remake the site into a 24/7 cultural center and non-profit utopia cut up by half a dozen streets.

Anything can be a terrorist target, so unless you want to live in caves, there is no reason not to rebuild the Twin Towers. By your logic, we should leave New Orleans in ruins (it is a hurricane target) and should have left San Francisco unrebuilt (an earthquake target...the big one is coming anyway, why should we build the city up again?)

The desire of the most vocal victims' family members that "thousands of people died there, you dare not rebuild the site" only shows what a narcissistic trainwreck of a culture we have become. NEVER in the history of mass death in destruction due to war or natural disasters has this ever been an issue in rebuilding a city. Why has it become one now? After the tsunami of 2004, the towns on the Indian Ocean border are being rebuilt after HUNDREDS of thousands of people died, many never to be recovered or burned in mass graves to prevent the spread of disease.

Even the memorial, as currently planned for the WTC site, is a disgrace, with random name listings and shoved underground with no artifacts from the 9/11 attacks.

It is time to undo the damage that politicians and elites have done to reclaiming the site from Osama and building an appropriate memorial. I don't see any reason why there should be an objection to this.

Thank you, Ms. Colon, for bringing back this issue and exposing the disgrace the rebuilding process has become as well as the fact that rebuilding the Twin Towers was an option that was ACTIVELY suppressed.
