Allthough this is nothing new among NYC cops, being in the trenches, we have seen the spike of gun violence, as well as shootings in the City go up. Now it must be noted that the NYPD does not release the number of times shots are fired in neighborhoods, or how many people are actually shot, unless the media come across it on their scanners. NYC is losing Police Officers at nearly 3000 a year, either through attrition, retirement, or resignation, and are having a hard time hiring a mere 800 recruits for their next class, something I have not seen in my 17 years on the job. John Lindsay during his tenure did not report certain events to protect his legacy, and his eventual bid for the White House. I see a similar pattern now being displayed by our current Mayor who believes that crime is really down, when crime is actually on its way up. One way for the media to truly uncover this is by examing DD 5's, which are the Follow Up reports to the original crime reports, and where crime is being downgraded in the rooms of precincts known as Crime Analysis. These reports are eventually given to the FBI, and then posted on their Uniform Crime Index, showing a decline in crime in NYC. The truth is, if you are not out in the trenches, then you won't really know what real crimes are happening, and what political hand has changed them. I predict in a few years, the City will return to the days when criminals ran wild, and the streets will no longer be safe to roam. You can then blame the Mayor for the Eight Hundred Pound Gorilla continuing to be fed in its isolated cage, and believing it was never hungry to begin with. Gun violence will continue, and shootings will be up this summer, simply because there are no cops on the streets.
