Evolution's Trap
in response to reader comment: no Christian monopoly

Submitted by MPW, May 28, 2007 13:02

They believe, to generalize broadly, that evolution is just one of the ways that a deity or deities works in the world, as they believe with regard to any other natural process. I don't happen to subscribe to that view, being non-religious myself, but disagreement with them is no justification for me or anyone else to conceal or lie about this fact. Active opposition to evolutionary theory in the Western world is the almost exclusive province of a particular subset of conservative Christians. I don't know for sure whether you belong to that group (your spelling of "G-d" seems to indicate that you're Jewish). But your comment is typical of their attempts to poison the well by labeling all opposition to creationism as anti-religious bigotry. More broadly, it's typical of their rhetorical gambit of trying to claim the mantle of "religious" for themselves exclusively. It's slightly more disheartening than usual to see a Jew (if you are such) allying him/herself with this transparently dishonest ploy of the Christian right. Also, I also find it amusing and instructive that Blackwell, after spending much of his op-ed pretending that evolution denial is about the scientific evidence, admits blithely at the end that evolution denial is a "conservative Christian belief."
