Starters Work Less Today, but No Less Hard

Submitted by carl, May 23, 2007 00:45

Had you actually seen the likes of Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax, Juan marichal, etal and the effect they had on the fans of baseball you would want to see more of todays pitchers complete their games. All the emphasis on baseball today is on hitting and the changes the baseball owners have made to the game is the real reason why pitchers today can't complete their games. Some of the changes today are smaller ballparks, the lower mound, possibly the ball made more lively and of course steroids which helped the batter to become stronger. All these factors are reasons why todays pitchers are unable to complete games and of course the amount of money they pay to set up men is also a reason to use them more often even when not required. Lets not demean or lessen the accomplishments of Tom Seaver and the rest of yesterdays pitchers. The game today is so robotic that it can become boring at times. An occasional complete game shutout is a thing of beauty and great athletic achievement.
