Study: Healthy Food Access Is Limited in Harlem

Submitted by JoLinda, May 18, 2007 17:21

Although my parents were raised here, I've been a Harlemite for 10 years and before the two Pathmarks opened recently, I shopped in middle/upper class neighborhoods in NJ, at BJ's and Shoprite, where I lived most of my adult life.

If I needed fresh food without crossing the river I had to go to Fairway or travel past 96th Street on either the West of East side..

One still cannot quickly run to the store for salad greens or fish. My husband and I enjoying Dr. Oz's "Your Waistline Diet" and we take the "A" train to 59th Street and shop at Whole Foods.

We hope a "Garden of Eden" type store opens on the W. 135th Street corridor soon.
