Don't Buy Into the Complaints of Small-Market Owners

Submitted by Joseph C, Nov 22, 2006 13:11

The best sport in America is the NFL. And the NFL has only gotten better over the past decade. Why? Because of a hard salary cap and equal TV revunue sharing. Throwing out the rediculous economic factor that the KNICKS, LAKERS, and BULLS already make DOUBLE the ticket revenue of a small market team, these teams also earn significantly more for there TV contracts.

The letter sent to the league is RIGHT ON. Even when the JAZZ are clicking on all cylinders (96-97, 97-98), they barely broke even. But as the mid-level exception and the salary cap continues to rise, it makes it even more difficult for small market teams to succeed. Larry H Miller has kept the Jazz in Utah because he's a Utahan, and he feels like it is his civic duty to Salt Lake City and the State. But if anyone else owned the JAZZ, they would probably be moved.

In the past, the revenue sharing that came from the LUXURY TAX actually would help teams that didn't exceed the tax threshhold. But the LAST CBA changed that... and you should know that JOHN! Small market teams that are under the cap are no longer helped the same way by the LUXURY TAX distribution system.

So I ask a question, my friend. Would the NBA be any fun if the GRIZZ were in Anaheim? How about moving the Jazz to Chicago, and the Bucks and Nets to NY. Hell... why don't we move small market teams to these big cities. Because it would delute the big market TV money, and these moves would destroy the league. The NFL has the formula right... and they make tons of money because of it.

The NBA should follow suit!

John, Yes, you couldn't be more wrong. Without small market teams the league would diminish to a purely cosmopolitan game. Kids in... [MORE]
