How Not To Write a Best Seller

Most people assume that my career as a writer ended when it came out that I had not disclosed who I really was. In reality, my career had ended long before journalists started looking under rocks. Each time I published a book, the marketing windows of opportunity were shrinking down to the molecular level. Until they finally went subatomic (you needed a particle accelerator to publish) and the time you had to keep yourself a viable writer had compressed itself into a window whose life-span was shorter than the flight it took to get to the next bookstore where you got to read your new book to the bookstore manager, the clerk, and the wall. Marketing has always been a bird of many colors but today it's a nervous bird, indeed, because it can be shot down in a duck season whose longevity knows no restraint. By the time it came out that I was, in truth, me, the duck had already been dead for such a long time, I wasn't me anymore, but had morphed into another animal entirely.
