In fact, another 2006 Gallup poll showed that which punishment people prefer as the most serious, 47% chose the death penalty while 48% chose life without parole. It is on the books in 48 states. The growing number of exonerations of innocent people on death row, the lack of evidence that the death penalty is a deterrent (homicide rates are higher in death penalty states, solid information that the death penalty costs more than life without parole are leading Americans to rethink their views on this issue.
