While the monument certainly is a historical landmark and deserves treatment as such, Grant was not merely "a president who ushered in an era of peace and equality." Grant may have been the most corrupt president in American history; his admistration was marred by gross incompetence, scandal and blatant anti-semitism. However, I don't see that as an argument against preservation, I just wanted to clarify.
