Dear Mr Steyn,

Thanks for another fine column. I was puzzled, however, over your reference to a famous battle in Vienna in 1693.

Perhaps the French were a decade behind even then, but I believe you meant to write 1683. That was the year that King Jan III Sobieski of Poland led his army to victory over an Ottoman horde bent on capturing Vienna. (The Austria emperor had fled and left his city to fend for itself.) Sobieski followed this victory with a second one a month later near Budapest where the remainder of the Ottoman army was destroyed.

This is also the origin of the bagel, created by the bakers of Vienna as a delicious replica of Sobieski's stirrup, which the people of Vienna clung to as he entered the city after its liberation.
