In her public apology, former MIT Dean of Admissions Marilee Jones said she was "...deeply sorry for [making false claims on her résumé] and for disappointing so many in the MIT community and beyond" who supported her, believed in her and gave her extraordinary opportunities. She did not, however, mention the people most deserving of an apology. Those would be the other candidates for her position who she left in the dust. These were probably capable people who listened to their conscience and stuck with the truth. Ms. Jones issued a self- serving apology that reminded the public of how many people she had helped, as others might have also done. This kind of off-target apology gives insight into the thinking of the Marilee Joneses of this world; they don't even think about the people who they have climbed over unfairly. Ms. Jones's apology was off-target by 180 degrees. An engineering student should have helped her direct it.
