DeLillo Confronts September 11

Carl Schurz put this more eloquently than I ever could over a century ago. The quote has been misused since then, but today it's more relevant than ever: "My country, right or wrong."

Many people interpret this to mean that Americans should reserve criticism and continue in a cynical kind of patriotism even when we're headed in the wrong direction. Sadly, these people forget the second part of Schurz's quote: "If right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right."

We need to set our country back in the right path, not abandon it. Anyone who'd prefer blind obedience, I think, misunderstands the very thing that makes our country worth fighting for.
