Madrassa Plan Is Monstrosity

Submitted by Daniel Meeter, May 1, 2007 16:38

As a Dutch Reformed pastor, a Dutch speaker, and a convinced Calvinist, I can vouch for the fact that Ms. Colon is comparing apples and oranges in her comparison to the Netherlands. The crucial difference is that the Dutch school law allows publically funded sectarian schools. The Dutch have no wall of separation between church and state. In the Netherlands, publically funded schools are allowed to teach religion as part of the school day, and they are allowed to teach an idealogically-slanted curriculum. It was the conservative Calvinists who got this law passed a century ago.

The Khalil Gibran International Academy will be an American style public school, on the secular side of the wall of separation. You can't compare these American apples to Dutch oranges. This is why I am happy to be a member of the Academy's advisory council.
