MIT Dean: I Padded My Résumé

Submitted by Amy De Rosa, Apr 27, 2007 19:23

Because my son applied to MIT last year, we grew to use and like all the great blogs that MIT Admissions offered for everybody from applicants to parents of applicants, to admitted students and even to non-admitted students. It seemed that MIT was as open as it could be about its admissions procedures and the MIT application did in fact have more interesting and unusual questions than other applications.

One of the only things that didn't quite ring true during the process was an early letter from Ms. Jones which gave applicants some handy practical advice with, at the end, a P.S. that admonished students: "Don't forget to have some fun this year.'

It was as annoying a remark then as it is now upon reading about Marilee Jones's deception. Students who are having 'fun' during the years leading up to and including their senior year will most likely not be applicants at a place like MIT.

As I'm getting ready to go through the college admissions process with our now-high-school-junior, I've learned that there are plenty of excellent colleges and universities out there where the admissions process does not create the stress of an MIT. It's disappointing to read that the MIT Admissions Office was run by someone who mis-represented herself not only to her institution but also to the many, many parents and high school students she communicated with via letters and blogs.
