The Nauvoo Expositor was a local newspaper who published an article about Joseph Smith's polygamy. The violence that was incited was Joseph Smith sending his men to destroy the Expositor's printing press.
Joseph Smith shot three men, two who died, before he was killed by the "mob." It is strange that someone who is in jail under "protective custody" would have a weapon.

Polygamy was the root reason that Mormons were run out of so many states. Most people did not want their young daughters getting married into some older man's polygamous family.

Parry Pratt, a Mormon missionary, was killed in Arkansas in 1857 after he married a woman who was already married. This lead a short time later to the Mountain Meadow Massacre where the people in a wagon train from Arkansas were executed by Mormons. 120 Men, women, and children were killed in a matter of minutes.
