The Lovable, Awful Old Ballpark
in response to reader comment: No, it's not the worst park in baseball....

This 13 year old is spending a few hours at the World's Fair but looking forward to an afternoon at a new ballpark neaby. He has spent the last two years becoming a Mets fan and watching many a game in a real old park called the Polo Grounds. From that park you could stare accross the Harlem River at the newer park called Yankee Stadium, a place I also loved to go. My father, uncle and I make what seemed then to be a long trek to a beautiful gleaming Shea Stadium. We had loge seats that day and when we finally entered the portal to the field I was awe struck with the beauty of this new palace. The Mets lose to the Pirates and we return to the World's Fair later but it was the real beginning of the New Breed. I know it's time but Shea will always be the real home of the New York Mets.
