A Taste of French Country Living

This article is a disappointment.
The Dordogne is beautiful and lively, not the nondescript "english" region as vaguely described in this article.
In the eastern reaches there is a dynamic restaurant scene; around Bergerac it is music throughout the summer. And with the new autoroute A89, you are in those famous Medoc chateaux in just over an hour (though why the author mentioned Medoc chateaux and no Dordogne chateaux is beyond me).
Yes, foie gras is made there but it is not the top region of the Southwest. And Armagnac is not made in the Dordogne but in Gascone country (Gers and Landes, both also home to foie gras).
Historically this region, which includes the famous boundary between occupied Bordeaux and "free France" during WWII, was where Jews from Alsace and Lorraine were shipped to handle farm duties until being herded to the death camps. hilltop airfields in the western Dordogne were used to smuggle the children out to Spain and England.
It is gorgeous, as the thousands of visitors, second home owners and residents know.\
