How Tolerant Are We?

As a political scientist, public administrator, and former elected municipal official, it seems to me that all those who want to make Mitt Romney's religion 'thee' story need to thoroughly review the role religion played in the Constitional Convention and how that role and subject played out in how James Madison and his collegues framed the First Amendment. Religion was the common ingredient that saved the day in Philadelphia and, like it not, it is the common element that will bring mankind together to save this planet. Why religion is considered so inimical to public discourse is another study in itself. Romney has it right. When it comes right down to it, fortunately, most American voters want a person of faith in the White House. This fact is replete in U.S. history and is thee common element for both political parties, just ask William Jefferson Clinton and the Jr. Senator from New York. We should be looking for ways to foster and inculcate religious values, morals and character into those seeking to become public servants at all levels of government - not seeking for ways to diminish the role religion plays in the development of character and qualification(s).
