Reader comment on:
West Point on East Side

Submitted by Dr. Lucille A. Housen, Nov 15, 2006 12:19

A heartfelt thanks to Ms. De La Rosa for her comments on the academy. Our family, too, had trepidations about my first grandchild, a female, and her choice about going to West Point. Her grades were excellent and she was in top physical condition, having completed the Bataan Death March marathon (26.2 miles) just before Beast. Before she undertook her long and complicated application process, I sat down with her and asked her what she truly wanted from her education. Her quick answer was, "I want to go to West Point and get my education and training at one of the top universities in the country." I then proceeded to assist and promote her in her decision, albeit with a heavy heart, especially after hearing about all our young people who are giving their lives in Iraq. Every time an obituary is posted on the parent website, my heart skips a beat.

After attending Plebe Parent weekend at West Point, we feel that our granddaughter is getting a top-notch education because the people that surround her truly care about her. Her sponsor has several plebes under her wing and keeps tabs on their educational, physical and mental wellbeing. The activities at WP are geared at involvement at all levels...she is a mule rider, thus keeping up with her love of big, four-footed animals! her phone calls home are cheery and upbeat. Her comment has been, "I miss you guys, but I am NOT homesick." Her new home will be with the military and we fully support her decision. Wouldst that other universities were that involved, up close and personel, with their students.
