A Bumpy Night for ‘Raymonda'

Submitted by Sir Joshua, Feb 22, 2007 08:14

It's been a good 20 years since I last saw Jerome Robins Antique Epigraphs, but I must say that it has stayed with me as a memorable NYCB moment. To call it 'dolorous' and not stately and mysterious is doing poor service to one of Robbins most interesting ballets. It certainly is a relief from all those plotless virtual abstract expressionist ballets that Balanchine cranked out to meet what must have been contractual demands from management. It is a refreshing and captivating moment in which the static imagery captured from an antique frieze is given movement and brings another era's aesthetic alive for us.
