The Fog of a Long War
in response to reader comment: The Limits of Congress

Except for one losing much of their privacy, and longer work hours, congress is indeed a nice job with a place to work. I'm ok with their pay, benifits, medical ins., pension, etc. etc.

What I don't like is that they also lead a rather charmed life. Other than their biannual elections, which they generally get rubber-stamp re-elected again and again in their respective left or right leaning district, they don't have much of a clue of what American workers and smaller business people deal with.

We deal continally with rising taxes (thanks to the grossly incompetant municipal level - a subject for another day), lossing pensions, worry about getting outsourced, loss of health insurance (I know more and more individuals who lose insurance or get major coverage cuts), worry about a new competitor who'll take their ricebowl.

That's all and fine in a free society. But one problem - Congress people never deal with those concerns.

They need competition, or they should taste what it's like to be Wallmarted. What I'm talking about here is "independants" who want to participate in the process of public serving: Not more lawyers, but good managers, business people, doers, etc.
